Tips for using Cedar Battens

When using Cedar battens for slatted fencing and cladding its always a good idea to trim both ends of your battens. This ensures that the battens will fit together flush and tight for a sealmess look. When battens are machined the ends are not always perfectly square so trimming them is the best way to ensure they are perfect for your project. You should also use stainless steel screws, nails or pins with Cedar to give a long lasting fixing. Non stainless fixings will result in black marks and staining of the timber.
When treating or staining your battens it is importanat to make sure that they have properly dried out before attempting to stain them. We reccomned only treating them during the summer months and leave them for at least six weeks of warm weather. Cedar should only be treated when its completely dry.

Why Slatted fencing?

The rise in popularity of slatted fencing has been huge. One of the reasons for this is that the strong lines of horizontal fencing contrasts so well against plants and natural elements.
It is a real case of opposites attracting! On the one hand you have the strong structural lines of horizontal fencing and the other hand the natural form of plants and trees, together they just work!
But why is horizontal slatted fencing so appealing to look at?ย  Well we think it may have a lot to do with the shadows between each strip of wood.ย  These shadows act as a separator allowing your eye to perceive each individual board. This is further highlighted when these boards run around the garden uninterrupted. Combine this with the wonderful varied colours of Western Red Cedar and it just becomes something really special.
